SOCIOLOGIZING EDUCATION
Meanings, Processes, and Institutions

There are now several attempts to address the problems of the Philippine education system. How might sociological framework, or frameworks contribute to an understanding of education and educational processes, and their relationships with broader societal forces at both micro and macro levels? This conference intends to demonstrate the relevance of sociology in shedding light on a central aspect of Philippine society. Proposals for individual papers as well as full panels (with at least three paper presenters) are welcome, particularly those that focus on the following thematic areas:

* The Meanings of Education: Gender, Class, Identities, and Mobilities
* The Teaching Professions
* Education, Poverty, and Marginalization
* The State, Education Bureaucracy, and Education Reforms
* Curriculum, Pedagogy, Technologies, and Classroom Microdynamics
* Education, Citizenship, and Civic and Corporate Social Responsibility
* Privatization, Corporatization, and Entrepreneurship in Education

Please send individual paper and panel proposals and abstracts to Ms. Grace Hain, Conference Secretariat (projects@pssc.org.ph/telefax: +63-2-9229621) by 31 July 2007. Abstracts of proposed papers should not exceed 200 words and should state clearly the research question(s) and key arguments; the methodology and theoretical perspective should also be mentioned.

Graduate Research Colloquium: Fr. Rogelio Orpiada

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology invites everyone to attend the Graduate Research Colloquium on Wednesday, AugusT 24, 4:30-6:00 p.m. at the SS Conference Room 1 and 2, 1st Floor, Social Sciences Building.

Mr. Rogelio Orpiada, M.A. candidate from the Ateneo de Manila University,will be presenting his research entitled “Voluntary Organization, Social Capital and Housing Development in an Urban Community: A Study of the Couples for Christ - Gawad Kalinga Community Development Program”. His thesis adviser is Dr. Ricardo Abad.

The weekly Colloquium is designed to provide graduate students who are in the thesis analysis and writing stage a venue to develop and validate their ideas with fellow students and the Department’s faculty.
